The Dovetails

Upper Carcase Back

The ball and flat bracket foot, although a bit unusual for the Eighteenth Century, was borrowed from a Goddard and Townsend secretary that sold at auction several years ago and was well-published. The base molding presents a cross-grain situation, and so while the front miter is glued, the rear floats in a keyed dovetail so that it will not loosen over time.
