The top is of curly maple, and does not at first look flat. It is hand planed so that the figure is not distorted by the fuzziness of abrasives. It was dyed honey amber, fixed with boiled linseed oil, and then shellacked and varnished, for durability. After curing, the varnish was rubbed out with pumice and wax, and the depth of grain is remarkable.
